NRG PALLAS Conducts Research for the Province of Gelderland on the Potential Integration of SMRs

At the request of the Province of Gelderland, NRG PALLAS has conducted a study on the possibilities for integrating Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) within the province. The study identifies four regions as potentially suitable for the deployment of an SMR.

Technical requirements for an SMR

To determine where in Gelderland there is space for an SMR, the study focused on two key technical requirements:

  • Sufficient cooling water to manage the heat generated by the reactor.
  • The regional energy demand to ensure efficient utilization of the produced energy.

Based on these factors, four areas have been identified as potentially suitable for the construction of an SMR:

  • Arnhem-Nijmegen
  • Rivierenland
  • IJssel-Zuid
  • Randmeren

Initial exploration, futher steps required

The study serves as an initial exploration and does not designate specific locations. Instead, it provides an early insight into the environmental and technical factors that influence the feasibility of an SMR in Gelderland. The province will now engage in discussions with municipalities and other stakeholders to further assess the possibilities. This will involve not only technical suitability but also societal and political considerations, such as public support and regional energy policies.

A step in the energy transition

Gelderland views nuclear energy as a key pillar for a stable and sustainable energy supply. An SMR could contribute to reducing fossil fuel consumption and enhancing regional energy sustainability. The province aims to designate two potential locations for an SMR by 2026.
